Survive the onslaught without going into debt

NOT VERY CASH MONEY is a game where micro-managing money and health is key to progression.

Note: The downloadable version is better. I don't really know why, but some particle effects dont render on the web version.

Money

Money is a key aspect of NOT VERY CASH MONEY. It is required for the two most basic actions of the game: Moving and Shooting.

Money can be obtained in 3 ways:

  • Killing Enemies
  • Completing Waves
  • As a chosen prize at the end of a wave

Your current balance can be viewed from the icon and text at the bottom of the lower HUD. Once this value descends below 100 cash, it will turn red and shake, indicating you are close to going broke!

If you run out of money and can no longer move, the current run will end.

Health

Health is another crucial element of NOT VERY CASH MONEY. The player's health is displayed as a long, green bar above the balance text on the lower HUD. If you run out of health, your run will end!

Combo

Killing enemies will show a Combo Bar at the bottom-right of the HUD. This combo is increased by killing enemies without taking damage. The higher your combo, the more money killing an enemy will bring.

The frequency of which your combo will be retained despite bringing damage, and the length of time before the combo naturally expires can be upgraded from the shop or end of wave prizes.

Enemies

NOT VERY CASH MONEY features 5 enemy types:

  • Normal
  • Skittish
  • Aggressive
  • Powerhouse
  • Spray 'n Pray

Each of these enemy types is visually a different colour, and has slightly different behaviour. For example, one type may have an increased tendency to move towards the player, while another may try and move away.

Waves

NOT VERY CASH MONEY is a wave-based game. Enemies will spawn in waves, progressively growing in size as you survive more waves.

Waves will grow by 1 enemy every 3 waves.

At the end of each wave, you are healed a small portion of health, given a small cash prize,  shown 3 options for a prize and the shop.

During the prize phase, the number of enemies in the next wave can be seen above the lower HUD.

End of Wave Prizes

At the end of every wave, you are shown 3 options for a prize for completing that wave. One of these prizes will always be an amount of money that scales with the number of waves cleared. The other 2 will be random perks of varying strength.

To pick a prize, simply walk into it. This will also close the shop, and start the next wave.

The Shop

Alongside being shown prizes at the end of every wave, you will also be given the opportunity to purchase items from the shop. Every wave will change the stock, so be sure to consider it every time you complete a wave! The shop always contains 3 single-purchase items.

One of these items available for purchase will always be a heal of 40HP. The other two will be randomly generated perks, the same as the kind available as end of wave prizes.

Perks and Upgrades

As previously mentioned, there are a number of perks and upgrades available for purchase. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Increase/Decrease in Projectile Spread
  • Increase in number of Projectiles shot at once
  • Increase in Regeneration
  • Decrease in time needed to be left undamaged to begin regenerating
  • Increase in Max Health
  • Increase in the chance for a Projectile to explode on impact
  • ...and more!

Bosses

NOT VERY CASH MONEY contains two bosses. A random boss fight will incur every 15 waves, and scale in difficulty the longer you survive.

I'll leave you to discover these bosses!

About

Made in a week for Jingle Jam's Community Game Jam 2024, under the theme 'Everything has a Cost'. Jingle Jam is a community charity drive run by the Yogscast to raise money for several good causes. Donate to Jingle Jam! (It would be very cash money of you, just saying!)

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for playing. It means the world to me.

Thank you so much to my friend GaboDabo for composing this game's music! Couldn't have done that without you :)

Nice Job! A simple design that works very well together, and the upgrade system feels nice too! I think there's a bit of a big gap between enemy difficulties which sometimes feel very overwhelming, and very easy the next round
